Termite Awareness Week is March 7-13th

Termite Awareness will be at an all-time high this year because of people staying home and enjoying their own spaces due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. More homeowners are renovating backyard spaces than ever before and it’s a good time to bring awareness to the destruction of Termites and signs of Termite Damage. As we know, Subterranean Termites love two things; Moisture and Wood (Cellulose material.)

Here is what to look out for when renovating your home this year:

  • Wood to soil content
    • Wooden porch or steps
    • Tree roots touching the foundation
    • Wood frame windows at ground level
  • Water Issues and Drainage
    • Ensure water drains away from foundation
    • Any leaks within the house inspect drywall and wood beams
  • Wood or Drywall Damage
    • Dying tree branches
    • Wooden stumps on property
    • Porch boards
    • Wooden window frames
  • Vegetation
    • Tree/Shrubs touching foundation
    • Inspect landscaping and wooden retaining walls

Last year, a young couple bought their first home in East York and quickly identified brown sandy shelter tubes along the drywall in their basement. They quickly called a Certified Termi Guard 24/7 Technician to inspect their home. After inspection, we found Termites were active on all four sides of their basement. In addition, we found a dying tree on their property which was providing a food source to the Termite Colony. We completed a full treatment and gave them a 3-Year warranty and recommended they remove the dying tree. The Termi Guard 24/7 warranty gives this young couple the peace-of-mind knowing their greatest asset is covered from destruction by Subterranean Termites.

Plans to Renovate?

Due to the increasing price for new homes, renovating older properties is becoming more popular. Older built homes; however captivating to look at, all tend to inherently have physical damage to the structure. To an untrained professional what may appear as water damaged wood, may likely be damage caused by Termites.

Termites damage the wood from the inside out and in many cases, activity goes unnoticed until it is too late. During the process of renovating, it is very common to find that Termites have made their way into your home undetected.

Termite Swarm Season is here

Spring is in full swing. Cold weather has left, and the warmth is here to stay. That also means its Swarm Season if you’re a colony of Termites. Swarm season is when Termites fly away from current colony to reproduce and start a new colony of their own. Think of it like when children grow up and leave the home to start a family of their own… that is of course, if they ever do leave.

Why is this important to know?

While these Alates (flying Termites) don’t eat the wood in your home, they reproduce at a fast rate. A new colony will form, and they will be working around the clock to feed on wood.

Stop the problem before it starts. Speak with a Licensed Termite Professional for an inspection today.

Blog: How do Termites get into a House?

The first thing to consider is that in an average termite-infested neighbourhood, there are often 500,000 Termites around a home. Their only purpose in life is to find a way into a house and to get at the treasure of wood found inside. So, they scour every square inch of the house’s foundation and the slab under the house. They never sleep; working 24 hours a day examining every brick, every mortar joint, every weep hole, every expansion joint.  Like every living creature they need water to survive. Termites are particularly attracted to moisture and often find entry through cracks, waterspouts, attached decks, door frames, or any infested wood debris.

Once there’s a crack in the armor – they’re in. They start construction of a mud tube to conceal their activity and start chewing away at the wood inside of the house.
